Splendid Forge

The studio

Small studio. Strange little worlds.

Splendid Forge is a young independent studio of designers and developers who would rather be playtesting. We build small games around one good verb and keep working on them until they feel right in your hands.

Habits, not values.

The things we keep saying to each other at the playtest table. Subject to playtesting.

  • One verb is plenty.

Tap. Look. Pull. If the controls need a paragraph, we haven't finished cutting.

  • Ugly first.

Grey boxes and placeholder bleeps. If it isn't fun like that, colour won't save it.

  • Characters are funny standing still.

They have to earn a laugh before they move.

  • Ten seconds to learn.

And a worryingly long time to put down.

  • Delight beats features.

One perfect bounce over ten half-finished modes.

  • Say where it's at.

Concept means concept. We'll tell you when it's real.

How a world happens

Every world starts as a grey box.

  1. Step 1A verbSomething your thumb wants to do again.
  2. Step 2A grey boxThe ugliest version that could possibly be fun.
  3. Step 3A playtestWe watch people's hands, not their faces.
  4. Step 4A worldOnly then: colour, character, weather, jokes.

No trophy shelf. Yet.

There's no headcount, download counter or wall of borrowed logos here. We're new, and we'd rather not pad it. What we have is 8 worlds in progress, each labelled with the stage it's at.
